Donald Judd was born in Los Angeles in 1930. He studied at the University of California, Davis, and the University of California, Berkeley. In 1956 he traveled to Paris, where he worked with Marcel Breuer. In 1964 he received his first public recognition for his work when Artforum magazine published a survey of his work. Judd's best-known works include the "five-panel" paintings from the 1960's and 1970's—large canvases containing five different paintings or collages—that have been exhibited throughout the world.
