Dogen (1200–1253), born Eisai, was a Japanese Buddhist monk and founder of the Soto Zen school of Buddhism. Dogen is famous for his short but highly influential essays about zazen meditation ("genjō kōan") and for his technical treatises on Zen Buddhist practice and theory. In these essays, Dogen provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for the practice of Zen meditation. These essays have been studied by both Japanese Buddhists and Western philosophers and have been called the founding documents of Soto Zen.
