She won two O. Henry Awards for her work as a journalist — one in 1996 and another in 2002 — and she was also the recipient of the Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship in Nonfiction in 2003. Diane has taught creative writing at Harvard University, Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, Columbia University (where she was awarded an honorary Doctorate) and Barnard College, among others.
She has also been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation and Yaddo.
