He was a consultant to the BBC for their documentary series The Human Body and has also worked extensively with television documentaries, including a two-part special on evolution for WGBH Boston/WNET New York. In 1964 he was appointed world authority on primates by the World Wildlife Fund (now World Wide Fund for Nature). In 1966 he became a consultant to London Zoo on primate education and housing design.
In 1973 he was an advisor to the National Geographic Society on primate issues and in 1975 he began a ten-year period as a consultant to the National Science Foundation on primate research and conservation issues in Brazil. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received honorary degrees from institutions in Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, Switzerland America Cuba India Pakistan Sweden etc...
