Dennis McKay was born in Australia and grew up in Mount Gambier, South Australia. He was educated at Adelaide University and the University of Sydney, where he studied under the eminent social anthropologist Robin Horton. In 1959, he joined the Australian Army as a researcher and was posted to East Africa. After leaving the army, he spent five years as a journalist for The Sydney Morning Herald, where his research on Ugandan cultural history led to the publication of his first book, The Heart of Africa (1962)
He has since written twenty-five books on Africa and is regarded as one of the major authorities on the subject. He is the author of several books on Africa for children. His works have also appeared in many anthologies.
