Born in 1870, Denison Lewis Hatch graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in mechanical engineering and established his own machine shop in Atlanta. He was appointed to the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Mechanical Engineers and served as President of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. In 1912, Hatch was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives and served three terms before being elected Governor of Georgia in 1916 and reelected twice.
