Denis Parsons Burkitt was born in 1875 in Bristol, England, where he served an apprenticeship to a "superintendent of engineers". After being discharged from the British Army in 1896, he moved to Canada where he resided for many years. He then moved to the United States and worked at various jobs across the country including construction work, shipbuilding, and railroad engineering. He died in 1983 in Houston, Texas.
