David Niven was born in London in 1916, the younger of two sons. He was educated at Eton and Oxford. After training, he served with No.6 Squadron, which became famous for its first successful raid on Berlin in 1943. The next year Niven was posted to the United States as a transport pilot - first B-17 Flying Fortress and then B-24 Liberator - flying supply missions to Britain during the invasion of Europe. In 1945 he joined 32nd Fighter Group of the US Air Force at Duxford near Cambridge, where he stayed until 1953.

In 1953 Niven took up acting and starred in many Hollywood films including The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), Darling (1965) and The Love Machine (1967). He also wrote four books: The Moon's a Balloon (1958), I Could Never Be Lonely (1959), Thank You Very Much (1964) and David Niven - A Memoir by His Wife (1975). He died in 1999.
