He has worked as a journalist and critic for more than forty years; he is the author of over fifty fantasy novels, three dozen short stories, and a handful of essays and non-fiction books, including two histories: The Hammer and the Sword: The Making of the Viking Achievement (2001) and The Dragons of Spring Dawning: The Making of the High Middle Ages (2010).
