In 1984 he received his Ph.D. from Princeton University for his thesis on the nature of consciousness, "The Conscious Mind". In 1991, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Melbourne for his contributions to philosophy and cognitive science

Chalmers has published over one hundred papers on philosophy of mind and cognitive science, including "Miracles: The Human Brain, God, and the Afterlife"; "Constructing a World View: A Naturalistic Approach to Philosophy"; "What is This Thing Called Science?"; "No More Singulars: A Pluralist Manifesto"; "The Singularity Hypothesis"; "Consciousness: The Philosophical Problems"; and most recently, "The Comprehensible Universe." He has lectured internationally as well as in Australia, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Russia and Spain.
