Cyril Ponnamperuma (1923–2013) was an eminent Sri Lankan author. He was the founding member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the first President of the Republic, and the first Prime Minister in independent Sri Lanka. Ponnamperuma was awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize in 1971 for his outstanding contribution to non-violent struggle in Sri Lanka, and was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1998.
