Released independently in 2000 with just one song ("A Better Son/Daughter"), Conor Oberst's debut album Candy Mountain quickly gained recognition within the Omaha music scene. With name recognition mounting, Oberst signed to Saddle Creek Records in 2002 and released his second album, Take It From The Man!, with additional Saddle Creek artists Matt Kallman and Will Johnson. In 2003 he released the EP Trampoline World with Fountains of Wayne drummer Matthew Caws.

In 2004, Oberst released his third full-length effort, Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Coyotes, which was recorded in Omaha at Tree Sound Studios by producer Chris Walla (Blink-182, Modest Mouse). After touring extensively throughout 2004 and 2005 supporting his album, Conor Oberst released his fourth studio album, The Moon & Antarctica at Tree Sound Studios in Omaha on May 5th 2006. The first single from the album was "Lua".

Its follow up "The Preacher" went on to become their first Top 40 radio hit in the United States.
