Colbert made her first film at age 13, and by age 18, she had signed a contract with Paramount Pictures. Her first major role came in "It Happened One Night", opposite Clark Gable. She went on to star in numerous comedies, including "The Awful Truth" (1929), "It's Love I'm After" (1931) opposite Maurice Chevalier, and the Oscar-winning "Duffy" (1936).

During World War II, she worked for the USO entertaining troops overseas. Colbert eventually retired from acting and moved to Miami Beach where she became active in charity work. She also served as an official delegate of the UNICEF Committee for Children of Namibia.

She died on June 16, 1977 in Miami Beach at the age of 68 from a brain hemorrhage.
