Christopher Smart was a brilliant English poet and essayist whose works include "The Song of the Shirt," "The Prologue to Aessayes, or the Life of Socrates," and "The Epitaph on Coleridge." Born in 1720, he began writing at age twelve and continued to publish throughout his life. In 1748 he published a collection of essays, The Progress of Error. He died at age 44.
