Christopher Johnson McCandless was born in August 1973, to parents David Hall McCandless and Karen Clark. He grew up the eldest of seven children in DeSoto, Texas, a small community just south of Dallas. He spent much time outdoors, camping, hunting, fishing, backpacking, mountain climbing and working on his family's ranch. Christopher attended school for less than one year before dropping out to hitchhike across the country
He travelled to 46 states and visited Canada before finally settling in Alaska with his girlfriend Paden. Christopher and Paden were later married and had two children: Rosario and Mariama. Christopher's life changed dramatically when he lost contact with all of his family and friends during a cross-country hike on August 20th, 1992.
His remains were found the following year by a family near Mount McKinley National Park. Christopher is currently buried in an unmarked grave on the North Slope of Alaska at the request of his family. There is no marker or headstone as he requested.
