Chris' first instrument was the piano, which he learned at age thirteen so that he could play along with the records his father played. At age sixteen he started playing drums, having heard about a new technique called double-bass drumming. During his teens, Chris switched to the electric bass guitar, which became his main instrument.

He grew up in England and was active in London bands until 1971 when he moved to Los Angeles to join Yes.
