Chen Ning Yang was born in China in 1941. He received his Ph.D from the University of Michigan in 1971. In 1979 he accepted a position as a Professor at Stanford University. In 1993 he became the first Director of the newly established National Science Foundation's Office of Basic Energy Sciences
Under his leadership, NSF managed a team of scientists working on a wide range of energy research programs including high-energy particle physics, advanced reactor technology, renewable energy sources, and environmental science. He also chaired the Commission on Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Applications for ten years, and contributed to the development of new directions for scientific research and technology policy in the United States. In 1999 he was appointed Chairman of the Board at Harvard University, where he continues to serve as a member of the Board of Overseers.
