Born in Germany, 1867. Educated at the Polytechnic School of Munich, where he studied electrical engineering under Professor Kohlrausch, receiving the degree of Ph. D. in 1891
In 1891, he went to Johns Hopkins University as instructor in mathematical physics, receiving the degree of M.A. in 1896. In 1900 he accepted a position as professor of mathematical physics at Clark University, teaching there until his retirement in 1942.
He then devoted himself to research and teaching until his death on February 4, 1945.
