Charles F. Deems (1910-1994) was born in Eugene, Oregon, and graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in architecture. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and after the war he moved to Los Angeles where he began working for Walt Disney Productions. He later became an art director for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), working alongside the likes of John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, and Orson Welles
Deems' work included designing sets for horror films such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but his greatest contribution came with his work on the MGM musicals of the 1940s. His work on An American in Paris, The Band Wagon,and Singin' in the Rain are considered legendary. Deems' other films include It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and Warlock.
Deems also wrote many screenplays during this period including The Swan and Operation Secret. He retired from MGM in 1959 after an illustrious career that spanned nearly twenty years.
