Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1944) was the first woman to serve as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She also served as president of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, President of the International Council of Women, and was an honorary vice president of the American Federation of Women. Her other offices included Secretary-Treasurer of the National Federation of Women's Clubs, Executive Secretary of the International Council of Women, Director-Secretary of the American Red Cross, Secretary-Treasurer of the New York City Hospital Aid Association, and Treasurer-Director of the New York Hospital for Women and Children. In addition to her public life she was a literary figure in her own right. In 1885 she published a collection entitled Poems from Prison Broadsides. In addition to this book she published many short stories and articles in magazines such as McClure's Magazine, Country Life in America, The Independent, and The Independent Woman Suffrage Journal.
