The major professional sports career of Bud Grant began in 1969 as Head Coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Grant was named NFL Coach of the Year in 1979 after leading the Vikings to a 10-4 record and their first playoff appearance since 1961. Grant continued his success in 1980, leading the Vikings to an 11-5 record and their second straight playoff appearance.

In 1983, he led the Vikings to their first playoff appearance since 1961. During his tenure as head coach, he coached members of seven Pro Football Hall of Fame players including quarterback Fran Tarkenton, receiver Paul Krause, running back Sammy White, defensive end Jim Marshall, linebacker Matt Blair, guard Ron Yary and defensive tackle Alan Page.
