Brian Schweitzer was born in Bozeman, Montana. He is a son of a ranching family and was raised on a family ranch in the Big Horn Basin. He has a Master's degree from the University of Montana and a law degree from the University of Oregon. In 1980, he began serving in the Montana Senate where he was eventually elected Speaker of the State Senate
In 1986, he became Montana's youngest Lieutenant Governor at age 32. In 1992, he won the Democratic nomination for Governor of Montana and defeated incumbent Governor Marc Racicot by over 500,000 votes. He was reelected in 1994 with 67% of the vote.
In 2004, Schweitzer was elected to his second term as Governor of Montana, capturing 64% of the vote.
