Brendan Behan (1923 - 1964) was an Irish writer and poet, as well as a social activist. He wrote 40 plays and seven novels. Behan has been described as "at once the most controversial and the most loved of Irish writers", he is best known for his play The Lieutenant of Inishmore, which chronicles the political history of Ireland over the course of over two centuries.
