Bobby Fischer (born "Boris Abramovich Kasparov") (1943 – January 17, 2008) was a chess Grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion. He is considered by many to be the greatest chess player of all time. He won the prestigious tournament at Cannes in 1966 ahead of the reigning World Champion, Boris Spassky of Russia. His last chess tournament was held in Reykjavík, Iceland, in 2002
Fischer was an outspoken critic of the Israeli government and made several statements regarding its policies towards Palestine during his chess career. He also made statements regarding American foreign policy and the Arab–Israeli dispute.
