William "Bill" Monroe was born in Hickman County, Tennessee, on April 28, 1886. He learned to play the guitar at the age of twelve and soon after began playing with his brother Charlie and two cousins, George and Dock. The Monroe Brothers soon became a popular group in the hills of East Tennessee and were soon making an annual trip to New York City which eventually led to their first recording contract. Over the next four years they recorded more than twenty-five songs for Columbia including "Moonlight on the Tombstone," "Onward Christian Soldiers," "My Grandfather's Clock," "Catfish Blues," "Old Joe Clark," "Wildwood Flower," "Wabash Cannonball," "Little Liza Jane," and many others that are still played today. In 1910 Bill Monroe formed his own group, the Blue Grass Boys, featuring Charlie Monroe, Dock Monroe ,and Bob Moore. This group would eventually become famous under the name of Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys.

The band was always changing lineups but never officially disbanded until 1975. Bill Monroe's legacy is still alive today with his band continuing to play each year at Carnegie Hall in New York City in celebration of his birthday.
