Bill Bowerman began working with the University of Oregon track team as the head coach in the summer of 1964. He was a graduate of the university, with a degree in physical education. In 1967 Bill took over as an assistant coach, and his belief in the importance of sports for young people soon led him to become head track coach. He was promoted to head coach in 1969, and his team won the NCAA Track and Field Championship in 1970
He later served as athletic director at the university.
