Bessie Coleman was born in 1892 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the only African-American woman to receive an airline pilot's license in 1923, and she became the first African-American woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean when she departed from Paris on May 21, 1926. In 1930, she established the first flying school for African-Americans, which is now known as Bessie Coleman Aviation Academy of Excellence.
