Benjamin F. Fairless was a Chief Warrant Officer 7th Grade in the United States Army. He was a pioneer in the field of Electro-Optic Sensor Technology and a pioneer in a much broader sense, as many consider him to be the original inventor of the "smart bomb" weapon system. He was also an expert in Unconventional Warfare and Special Operations, as well as being a highly skilled pilot, aerial photographer, and test pilot
His unique combination of talents made him a valuable asset to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and United States Air Force (USAF) during the Cold War era (and still does). His technical skills were put to use by the CIA in developing tactical weapons that were used by US Special Forces against enemies of the USA. Among them was an explosive device known as "The Fairless Device" which was used on the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
