Benjamin Cardozo (1870–1938) was an American lawyer and judge who served as the first Jewish Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He was known as "The Great Commoner." Born in New York, Cardozo became a leader in the Democratic Party and served as Solicitor General of New York (1916–17) and Attorney General (1918–23). He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1923 by President Warren G. Harding, with whom he had previously served in Congress
He remained on the Court until 1938, when he died in office.
