He attended college at the University of South Carolina, where he was Book Review Editor of The Daily Gamecock, White's Sailing Magazine, and the South Carolina Alumni Magazine. After graduating from college in 1958, Bridges joined the United States Army. He served as an Army Ranger for six years, including a tour of duty with the First Special Service Force during which he saw action in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged in 1966, he moved to Southern California to pursue an acting career.
