His first real command came when he was given responsibility for training mercenaries for service with the British army. On his return to Prussia, Steuben took over the regiment called the "Garde Fusiliere" (the first regiment of enlisted musketeers in Prussia), which was stationed at Königsberg, Pomerania. The men of this regiment were largely used as shock troops during operations against Poland during the Seven Years' War.

After the war, Steuben returned to Königsberg where he was named commander of all Prussian forces stationed within Pomerania. He left this post after a short time to become inspector general of cavalry and artillery for Frederick II.
