Augusto Pinochet Ugarte was born in Valparaiso, Chile, on December 8, 1915. He was the son of a successful naval engineer and an elementary school teacher. After completing his studies at the Naval War College (1953) and at the National War College (1957), he was promoted to rear admiral in 1958. He played an active role in national politics throughout his career, serving in various cabinet posts under President Eduardo Frei Montalva ( 1964–1970 ). During this period, he also served as Minister of Defense (1968–1970) and President of the Senate (1970–1973).
This period also saw him elected to the presidency by Popular Referendum on September 10, 1970.
