August Weismann was one of the leading German pathologists of the late 19th century. He was the son of Karl Weismann, a renowned German anatomist. August was born in 1834 in Wiesbaden and studied medicine in Berlin, Vienna and London. Following his military service he returned to Berlin where he began to study medicine under Robert Koch
This led to his appointment as an assistant pathologist at the University Clinic of Charité in Berlin in 1874. He became Professor of Pathology in 1891 when Wohlfart assumed that chair. He held the position until his death in 1900.
