Atle Selberg is a mathematician and a mathematical physicist, who was born in Oslo, Norway. He received his PhD from Princeton University in 1950. In the 1960s Selberg worked at the University of Chicago with John Archibald Wheeler and Richard Feynman, who introduced him to physics and to David Hilbert's work on problems – a major influence on Selberg's research. He returned to Norway for a short time before accepting a position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton
