Astrid was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended the International School of Art & Design in Kansas City before moving to Chicago, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating cum laude. Astrid had her first short stories published at the age of 14. "A Girl's Gotta Be Bad, or What's Wrong With Me", won the 1994 American Library Association's Alex Award for Best Young Adult Book

Astrid is a creator of action comics and graphic novels, including "Dead Girl", "Tango", "The Girl with the Demon Wings" series, co-created with artist Jodi Wynne, and "Gingerbread Girl". Astrid also penned "The Pretty Little Devils" for DC Comics, which she collaborated on with writer J. Torres.
Her work has appeared in "Buzzy Magazines" and "Alternative Press". At age 15 she won an award for her story "Why?"
