The movement was aimed at protecting the constitutional monarchy against any revolutionaries who would seek to topple it. O'Neill's "History of the Ancient and Modern Illuminated Masonry" was published in 1825. It presented a history of Masonry to that point, based on documents stolen from Mason lodges during the French Revolution.

He was charged with high treason in 1827 but acquitted. O'Neill died in 1857.
