Anthony Jay Cleveland was born October 10, 1892 in Chicago, Illinois. His family moved from Chicago to Kansas City, Missouri when he was a young boy, and then to Moline, Illinois when he was in his teens. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1912 in a class of six hundred and became a teacher in the same year. In 1913, he moved to Chicago where he taught at East High School for two years
In 1915, he left teaching to become a full-time author and editor. In 1923, Cleveland married Carrie Fairley. He died on June 30th 1954 in Los Angeles, California.
