Andrei Tarkovsky was a master film director. He was born May 16, 1932 in Stavropol, Russia. His mother, Maria Andreevna Sologub, was an actress, and his father, Manuk Andreievich Tarkovsky (1897–1958), was a theater director. His first film was Homo Sovieticus (1961), which won the Silver Harvest Prize at the Cannes Film Festival
It was followed by Nedelya (1962) and Stalker (1979). Fifty years after its first release, Stalker remains one of the most influential films of all time. Two years after its first release Stalker won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
