Andreas Dutschke was born in October of 1941 in Hamburg, Germany. He attended the Hans-Bredow-Schule, one of the highest schools in the country, and began his studies at the University of Hamburg. He was active with the student movement and became an important figure in the New Left. In 1967 he was arrested and sentenced to several months jail time for assaulting a police officer during a protest march
Upon his release he traveled to France, Spain, Czechoslovakia, and other countries throughout Europe before settling in London in 1970. His book "15 Jahre Opposition" appeared in 1971 after he had spent nearly two years incarcerated for his political activities. It became a best seller in Germany and was translated throughout Europe.
