Alton Thompson was born in Monroe, Washington and spent his early childhood in the small town of Grand Coulee, Washington and the nearby towns of Wenatchee and Walla Walla. He attended the University of California at Los Angeles for two years before enrolling at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Alton became a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and graduated with a BA degree in English in 1955. He went on to earn a MA in English from Gonzaga University in 1957 and an MBA degree from Pepperdine University the following year
He was also awarded honorary Doctorates from Gonzaga University, Gonzaga Graduate School of Business Administration, and Pepperdine University. Dr. Thompson is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi (honorary), Pi Eta (honorary), Phi Beta Kappa (honorary), Pi Sigma Alpha (honorary) and Sigma Tau Delta American honor society.
