Alonzo Mourning is the current mayor of the city of Miami, Florida. He is also a former basketball player for the Miami Heat and a global ambassador for UNICEF. Mourning graduated from the University of Maryland in 1987 with a degree in history and political science. After being drafted by the Heat in 1993, he spent nine seasons with the team becoming one of the most popular players in franchise history. In 2000, Mourning was named captain of the Heat and later that year led them to their first ever NBA title, defeating the New Jersey Nets in five games. In recognition of his leadership skills, Mourning was named one of seven captains for Team USA's 2004 Olympic Games team.
In August 2005, he was inducted into the Atlantic Coast Conference Hall of Fame and in November 2007, he joined the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.
