Aloe Blacc was born on June 23, 1976, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in Inglewood, California, where he attended high school at the Crossroads School of Arts and Sciences. While attending high school, Blacc gained wide recognition for his musical skills. He became the lead singer of the group Fresh 'n' Fly on the World Wide Web (W.A.W.I.) -- a successful dance group that toured internationally and sold millions of albums
The group had three gold albums and three platinum albums during their career. Blacc also started acting at an early age, appearing in two of his father's films: A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1991) and Earth Song (1993). Shortly after the release of Earth Song, Aloe officially changed his name to Aloe Blacc (he had previously used the name Aloe Blacc-Lewis) to reflect his change in musical style.
