Alfred Whitney Griswold was born in New York City on April 20, 1877. He attended Columbia University for two years before transferring to Harvard Law School, where he received his LL.B. in 1903. After nine years of practice at various New York City law firms, he became involved with the publishing industry—working primarily on the editorial side—and eventually headed the firm of Houghton Mifflin Company. His publications included several volumes of poetry and some fiction, including A Son of Hagar (1921), The Four Winds of Heaven (1922) and The Word Is Mine (1923). Griswold's poetry has been collected in the book A Harvest of Poetry, while his novel A Son of Hagar has been considered a cult classic.
