Alex Haley (1922-1993) was an American journalist, historian and writer best known as the author of Roots: The Saga of an American Family , the first book to win a Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. He was an editor of The New York Times during World War II and later wrote for Ebony and McCall's magazines. His works include The Autobiography of Malcolm X and Roots: The Saga of an American Family . A two-part television miniseries based on this book aired on ABC in 1977 and 1979.
