Albert Dietrich was born in 1910 in Munich. He studied medicine at the universities of Munich, Kiel, and Vienna. From 1933 to 1938 he worked as a physician at the Lehrter Hospital in Berlin. He joined the German army in 1939 and was taken prisoner by the British in September 1939, spending three years in prison camps
After his release he emigrated to South Africa, where he became a paediatrician. He died on September 6, 1998, two months shy of his ninetieth birthday.
