Alan Marshall was born in South Africa in 1968. He grew up in Johannesburg where in 1989 he graduated in English and Philosophy from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Marshall is an avid rugby fan, having played for the University of Pretoria. He started his career in the finance industry, working at ABSA Bank (Johannesburg) where he was Director of Global Corporate Banking. He left banking to move to Dublin, Ireland where he worked as an investment banker for Merrill Lynch for 6 years, most recently with Goldman Sachs in London, before moving back to London to work for Brown Advisory (a boutique investment bank) before starting his own investment business, Marshall Investment Management Ltd
