A.J.P. Taylor was born in London in 1902. He served in the Royal Navy during the First World War, and in the Second World War he was Professor of History at Oxford University. He was reviewing editor of The Times from 1948 to 1970, and also wrote several well-regarded biographies
His best-known work is The Origins of the Second World War (1961). He died in 2000.
