A.J. Orde was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and grew up in a small village called Fyvie. He studied architecture at the University of Aberdeen and then went to work for a building company called Seddon & Partners after graduating from university. Orde's first book, The Greatest City on Earth: A Portrait of Venice, won him a British Society of Authors award in 2000
In 2003 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, and in 2004 he won the Irish Book Awards Book of the Year award for his book The Last Son of Africa.
