Agnes Mary Clerke (1780-1821), a member of the Order of the Daughters of Charity, was born in Dublin to a family of minor Irish gentry. She was educated in a convent and at a Roman Catholic school run by nuns before going on to study medicine at University College Dublin. In 1802 she took a post as a nurse at the Workhouse Infirmary in Dublin, but her professional career was cut short by ill health. In 1808 she took up residence at the Sisters of Charity Hospital in Cork – a place where she worked until her death from tuberculosis in 1821.
