Adam's international career started when he won a bronze medal at the 2004 European Championships in Madrid, Spain. In 2005 he was selected for Great Britain's Commonwealth Games squad and went on to win three gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. In 2007 he became the youngest person ever to become world champion by winning gold in the 100m breaststroke in Montreal, Canada.

In 2010 Adam won his second 100m breaststroke world title at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China. He won a further five world titles between 2011 and 2014 and is now one of the most decorated British athletes of all time.
